Hagley and the Brandywine Powder Mills

In 1802 E.I. du Pont built black-powder mills along the Brandywine. They became the largest gunpowder works in the country and supplied the Union in the Civil War. The stone mills were built open on the river side so a blast would vent toward the water. The works closed in 1921. The site is now the Hagley Museum and Library.
