Fort Christina (The Rocks)
Underground RailroadIn March 1638 the Kalmar Nyckel and the Fogel Grip landed Swedish and Finnish settlers at a natural rock wharf on the Christina River. They built Fort Christina, named for Sweden's child queen. It was the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley. A black-granite monument sculpted by Carl Milles, a 1938 gift from Sweden, marks the spot today. The Rocks is also a recognized site on the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
